How to verify: data.iowa.gov

To verify: search the Active Iowa Construction Contractor Registrations database at data.iowa.gov, or the Division of Labor at dial.iowa.gov.1 Search by business name.

Check:

  1. Status active registration on file
  2. Name matches the business on your contract
  3. Trades if the job includes electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, verify those state licenses too
  4. Workers compensation registration requires it, which protects you if a worker is hurt on your property

A contractor doing $2,000-plus of work who is not registered is operating illegally, and that alone is reason to walk away.

Registration vs a license

It helps to know what registration does and does not mean. Registration confirms the contractor is on file with the state, carries workers compensation, and can be held accountable. It does not test trade competence.

Iowa does license the skilled trades separately. Electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians hold state trade licenses that test competence.1 For a senior project that includes new wiring for a stair lift or plumbing for a curbless shower, verify the trade license on top of the registration.

Your protection: the Consumer Fraud Act

Iowa’s consumer protection lives in the Consumer Fraud Act, enforced by the Attorney General, which bans deception in home repair.2

The senior layer: when a violation is committed against an older Iowan, the court may impose an additional civil penalty of up to $5,000 per violation, paid into a dedicated elderly victim fund.3 The Attorney General has used this and the Door-to-Door Sales Act against contractors who took money from older homeowners and failed to perform, including a case that reimbursed an 87-year-old man.

Iowa’s Door-to-Door Sales Act also gives you three business days to cancel a sale made at home. Get scope, materials, total price, and dates in writing before any deposit, and pay by check or card, never cash.
