A contractor who needs the license for your project but cannot show an active one, or whose classification does not cover the work, is not properly credentialed.
Your protection: cancel within three days
West Virginia’s consumer protection lives in the Consumer Credit and Protection Act. Its home solicitation rule gives you a strong, simple right.2
Your three-day right: for a sale made at your home, you can cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing.2 Give written notice to the seller, and within ten days the contractor must return all your money and cannot keep any deposit or down payment. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division enforces the Act against unfair and deceptive home repair practices.3 Get scope, materials, total price, and dates in writing before any deposit, and pay by check or card, never cash.
