The short version: Wyoming has no statewide contractor license for general contractors, plumbers, or mechanical trades. Licensing is local, so verify with your city or county building department. The one exception is electricians, licensed statewide by the State Fire Marshal at wsfm.wyo.gov. Your protection is the Consumer Protection Act, and Wyoming gives homeowners 60 and older an extra edge: the right to recover attorney fees.

Wyoming licenses contractors locally, not statewide

Wyoming is one of the few states with no statewide general contractor license. Licensing for general, plumbing, and mechanical work is handled by individual cities and counties, so the rules change from town to town.1

The one statewide license: electricians

Electricians are the exception. The Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety, part of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, licenses every electrical contractor in Wyoming, and each must have a licensed master electrician of record.1

How to verify: search the State Fire Marshal’s license lookup at wsfm.wyo.gov by name or license number.1 Confirm the license is active. For a senior project with new wiring, a stair lift circuit, or added lighting, this is the one license you can check in seconds online.

How to verify a general contractor: call your town

Because there is no state search for general contractors, pick up the phone.

Call your city or county building department and ask three things: is this contractor licensed here, is the license active, and will they pull the permit for my job. A contractor who pulls the permit in their own name keeps the inspection and the responsibility on record. Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, and Gillette each run their own contractor licensing.

Your protection: the Consumer Protection Act

Wyoming’s consumer shield is the Consumer Protection Act (W.S. 40-12-101), enforced by the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection and Antitrust Unit.2 It bans deceptive trade practices, including home repair fraud. A consumer can sue to recover actual damages.

A real edge for seniors: Wyoming law lets a consumer who is 60 or older, or who has a qualifying disability, also recover attorney fees in a private suit, which a younger consumer cannot.3 That makes it far more practical to take a bad contractor to court.

Get scope, materials, total price, and dates in writing before any deposit, and pay by check or card, never cash.
