The bigger federal HEAR rebate (up to $8,000) is administered by the Governor’s Office of Energy but not open yet. The federal 25C credit expired after December 31, 2025.

Nevada has a strong live utility rebate

Nevada is in good shape for a live rebate because one utility, NV Energy, serves almost the entire state, and its PowerShift program pays real money on a heat pump: $510 to $3,400, with the higher amounts for higher-efficiency equipment.1

NV Energy operates as Nevada Power in the Las Vegas area and Sierra Pacific Power in the Reno area, so most homeowners in both halves of the state qualify.

The state rebate: approved, not open

Nevada was allocated about $96 million for the federal HEAR and HOMES programs, run by the Governor’s Office of Energy, but they are approved and not yet open as of mid-2026, with the launch date still to be announced.2

When HEAR opens, it will pay up to $8,000 for a heat pump for income-qualified households, on top of what PowerShift already gives you. Watch energy.nv.gov for the launch.

The senior and income path: Weatherization

For a low-income Nevada senior, this is the live option today. The Nevada Weatherization Assistance Program, administered through the Nevada Housing Division, provides free energy improvements such as insulation and air sealing, identified through a home energy audit.3

Why it helps even without a heat pump: the free audit and the sealing and insulation it funds cut how much cooling and heating your home needs, which matters in Nevada’s hot summers and lowers your bills now. It also shrinks the size and cost of any heat pump you install later. When the state HEAR rebate opens, it adds an income-qualified path to the heat pump itself.

Income limits for the state rebate (when it opens)

HEAR uses Area Median Income (AMI) at the county level.6 Below 80% AMI gets the highest tier (up to $8,000); 80 to 150% AMI gets 50% of project cost.

For a senior household on Social Security only, eligibility is usually clean in any Nevada county.

Federal layer (2026)

The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, which paid up to $2,000 for a heat pump in prior years, expired for installs after December 31, 2025.4

What remains in 2026:

  • 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit: 30% of solar cost through 2034. Applies if you pair the heat pump with solar, which pairs well with Nevada’s strong sun.5
  • 25C on insulation, panel upgrades, and audits: still active at smaller caps. Heat pumps are excluded.

Senior stack scenarios

Scenario A: Las Vegas retired couple, NV Energy, high-efficiency heat pump

  • NV Energy PowerShift rebate (top tier): up to $3,400
  • Live today: up to $3,400. On a $14,000 install, out-of-pocket can drop toward $10,600 before the state rebate.

Scenario B: Reno household, NV Energy, mid-efficiency heat pump

  • NV Energy PowerShift rebate: around $1,000 to $2,000
  • Live today: $1,000 to $2,000. Add the state HEAR later if income-eligible when it opens.

Scenario C: Low-income Henderson senior

  • Nevada Weatherization Assistance: free audit, sealing, insulation
  • NV Energy PowerShift: on the equipment
  • Live today: free efficiency work plus the PowerShift rebate, with the $8,000 HEAR to come.

Verify your contractor first

A rebate is only as good as the contractor who installs the equipment. Nevada licenses contractors through the State Contractors Board, and NV Energy may require a participating contractor.

Red flags to reject, and one fits Nevada’s climate:

  • High-pressure summer AC sales. Nevada’s heat drives urgent pitches; slow down and get three quotes.
  • Door-to-door pitches. Legitimate contractors do not cold-call.
  • A “guaranteed” state rebate. The HEAR program is not open, so nobody can guarantee it.
  • R-410A equipment for a 2026 install. That refrigerant no longer qualifies under the EPA rule.7
